Everything to know about the Atlanta Margarita + Taco Festival

Springtime in Atlanta is a season rich with food festivals and interesting things happening around town. But if you're unsure about what festival to visit next, Food-O-Rama's Atlanta Margarita + Taco Festival has emerged as one of the city's most anticipated events.

The inaugural festival begins at 11 a.m. May 20 in Grant Park, 840 Cherokee Ave. SE, According to the event's Facebook, the inaugural festival has more than 40,000 people interested in attending later this month.

Here's what to know about this new festival that marries the ideal duo of tacos and margaritas:

Don't confuse it with last year's Atlanta Taco Festival.

Last year, there were complaints about tickets being oversold and technology problems at the Atlanta Taco Festival that was hosted by a different company. This year Food-O-Rama wants the first-ever Atlanta Margarita + Taco Festival to take a different approach. The event is absolutely free to attend. There will be $6 wristbands available for those (21 and up) who would like to drink, and $1 of the wristband sales will go to the Africa Yoga Project, which is an initiative to use yoga to help empower youth in Africa. For children to enter the kids' zone, it will be $7 for endless access to the inflatables.

There will be a margarita and taco battle.

Attendees will have the chance to sound off on what their favorite margaritas and tacos are by texting a 1-800 number found on their wristbands, according to Food-O-Rama spokeswoman Robyn Ware. The winners in the categories will be presented "best taco" and "best margarita" awards on stage towards the end of the day. Food-o-Rama is seeking submissions for the throphies' sketch design. If interested, submit you sketch for best taco and best margarita by May 3 to jim@foodoramaevents.com.

Expect a variety of tacos.

Tin Lizzy's, El Preferido, On the Border, Loaded Taco and Let's Taco Bout It are among the dozens of food vendors slated to serve up tacos.

"From Korean BBQ to Mexican, from Southern style to Caribbean, from Buford Highway to East Atlanta, this festival is about celebrating the amazing diversity that this city offers in the most delicious way, through tacos," Food-O-Rama Events founder Jim Shumake said in a press release.

Plan to try different flavors of margaritas.

There will be 10 margarita bars at the festivals to bring a range of flavors to the festival, according the press release. Many of the bars will be hosted by local restaurants in Atlanta. On the Border's bar is bringing in ice cubes made with raw ginger that will change the flavor profile of the margaritas as the ice melts, Ware says. Also, all specialty margaritas will be made with the festival's sponsored tequila, Goza.

It's not just about tacos and margaritas.

The festival has something for everyone to enjoy, such as other options for food, an artist market and live music. Ware said some vendors will offer queso and guacamole with chips. At the artist market, there will be about 20 vendors selling items including jewelry, home goods, pottery and bath goods. You won't have to worry about carrying cash to buy from the artist vendors, because they'll accept credit cards. After getting their fill of all the eats offered at the festival, attendees can dance off the food to the sounds of live music at Grant Park.
