Located on 10th Street in Midtown, Gilbert’s Cafe had been a longtime neighborhood favorite. Recently, though, owners Sean and Gilbert Yeremyan, who also own and operate HOBNOB Neighborhood Tavern and 10th & Piedmont, decided it was time to make some changes, including updating the decor and the menu, and rebranding the concept as G’s Midtown.

The look: The configuration of the storefront space is mostly the same, with a cozy sunken dining room at street level, and a bar area steps above. New additions include metal accents, exposed bricks, butcher block tabletops and aluminum chairs, a concrete bar top, and multiple flat-screen TVs that project a sports pub glow.

The scene: One recent weeknight, a mostly male crowd occupied the bar area. In the dining room, a large party took over a couple of tables for a celebration, while several couples settled in for full course dinners with drinks, entrees and desserts.

The food: In describing the new menu, the brothers Yeremyan have used the "gastropub" word. Whatever you call it, the cooking mostly riffs on familiar fare. Grilled turkey "ribs" ($10) are glazed in a peach-soy sauce and presented like wings with blue cheese dressing. G's pimento bacon cheeseburger ($10) comes with fried jalapenos and Parmesan truffle chips. G's iron skillet mac and steak ($18) is a grilled-to-order and sliced 8-ounce top sirloin with herb butter served over cheesy elbow macaroni and green beans. A blackened mahi-mahi fillet ($16) is served over risotto and sauteed garlic spinach with white wine butter.

The drinks: A new chalkboard beer list posted on the back wall near the kitchen features a few drafts and a fairly large selection of canned offerings, from old school Bud Light ($3.75) to crafts like Westbrook White Thai ($5). Signature cocktails include Superfruit Peach Tea ($10), mixed with VeeV acai liqueur, Absolut Vodka, honey peach puree and iced tea. Adult milkshake specials ($9) combine booze and dessert in a glass topped with whipped cream and a cherry.

The extras: Look for events and promotions almost every night of the week, including karaoke Sundays and Wednesdays, trivia on Mondays, and $12.95 all-you-can-eat brunch on the weekends.
