UPDATE: Delta modernizing gate areas at Hartsfield-Jackson

Delta Air Lines is in the middle of a three-year, $136.8 million effort to modernize its gate areas at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

It’s part of as broader modernization and expansion of the Atlanta airport that will roll out over 20 years. This year, 2017, will be one of the biggest years for construction in the airport’s capital improvement program called ATLNext.

It’s been a year since Delta launched the contracting effort for its gate modernization.

At the time, Delta’s regional director of properties and facilities Kenneth Dodson said: “We’re going to modernize the airport…. We’re going to add more windows, replacing windows and bringing in more light.”

Another key improvement for travelers: Delta is adding more seats with power outlets as part of the renovation.

The renovated gate areas will also have slanted ceilings, new carpet and paint.

After securing contractors, construction began in September on Concourse T. Temporary seating and walls are in place during construction, and the project is proceeding on time, according to Delta.

Work on Concourse T gates will continue through February, then construction will begin on Concourse A.

Gates on Concourses T and A already have new seats and carpet, according to the airline.

Delta said it looks forward to customers “enjoying the benefits of the modernization.”

The renovations will cover a total of 85 Delta gates, and Dodson told contractors interested in the project, “There will be no gate closures during operating hours. Those gates are too important to us.”

Delta is handling the renovations on its gates on Concourses T, A, B and C, in a system that gives the airline more control over the project to coordinate construction with its use of the gates for flights.

A separate effort is underway to renovate other airlines’ gates at Hartsfield-Jackson. That project is also aimed at bringing more natural light into the concourses, add new ceilings, lighting and carpet.

Hartsfield-Jackson itself is contracting with companies for renovations in the domestic terminal complex, including the atrium.
