If you're looking for a job, it's a great time of year to apply. Many companies are looking to beef up their hiring in anticipation of the holiday season, and in some cases, these positions may translate into longer-term employment.

These are some of the metro Atlanta companies that are making big hires this holiday season:

Target is increasing its holiday hiring this year, adding 100,000 people to work at its more than 1,800 stores nationwide. That's an increase from the 70,000 people it hired last year during this time. In addition, the retailer will hire 4,500 people to help pack and ship online orders at its warehouses.

UPS plans to hire about 95,000 seasonal employees to cover the holiday shipping period from November through January. The Sandy Springs-based company hired about the same number of seasonal employees last year.

Macy's will increase its normal staffing during the holiday season, hiring about 80,000 new workers. New hires will staff stores and fulfill online orders, including shipping and packaging.
