Atlanta airport outage: Here’s how to check your flight status Monday

The calamitous power outage Sunday at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will continue to affect flights the day after.

Delta Air Lines has already canceled 300 flights for Monday.

The Atlanta-based carrier, which has its largest hub at Hartsfield-Jackson, said most of the Monday flight cancellations are early morning flights into Atlanta. That will allow its operation to “more quickly return to normal,” according to the airline.

Delta said its flight schedule in Atlanta is “expected to return to normal by Monday afternoon.”

If you’re scheduled to fly at the start of the work week, you should check your flight status on your airline’s website or app.

Delta Air Lines has posted a statement on the impact of the outage on flights Monday:

Delta customers scheduled to traverse Atlanta Monday are encouraged to check their flight status as approximately 300 flights will be cancelled due to Sunday’s power outage at the Atlanta airport affecting all airlines there. The largest number of cancellations on Monday are early morning and inbound to Atlanta to give the operation there an opportunity to more quickly return to normal. Delta previously cancelled approximately 900 mainline and Delta Connection flights Sunday and diverted 48 flights to alternate airports due to the nationwide groundstop for Atlanta-bound flights. The airline is working to reaccommodate affected customers on alternate flights. Cancellations are designed, in part, to allow the operation to best reset Monday.

Delta leaders having been working to support customers by coordinating with Atlanta airport officials and leaders at the City of Atlanta and Georgia Power.

Delta customers are encouraged to check the status of their flight via the Fly Delta mobile app or delta.com before heading to the airport. Customers flying to, from or though Atlanta can make a one-time changes to their travel plans. Details are available at delta.com.

Delta has temporarily embargoed unaccompanied minors from traveling Monday due to the power outage. Unaccompanied minors who already began their travel Sunday may continue.

The Atlanta Airport, along with Atlanta Police Department, is restricting the vehicles allowed to the terminal drop-off and pick-up area due to congestion. The Atlanta Airport is providing updates at http://www.atl.com/media-center/. Georgia Power is updating on Twitter.

Wait times for customer service phone lines are long, Delta acknowledged. The airline encouraged its customers who need to book flights to use its website or app.

Southwest also issued a statement:

While we hope to operate a full schedule at ATL [Monday] (if power is restored overnight), the situation is still very dynamic and our operational plan might adjust accordingly. Therefore, we advise customers to check flight status on Southwest.com or via our mobile app for the most up-to-date information for tomorrow's operation.

Hartsfield-Jackson is posting updates on its Twitter feed at @ATLairport. The Atlanta airport said Transporation Security Administration checkpoints will open at 3:30 a.m. Monday, and passengers whose boarding passes are dated 12/17 (Sunday) will need to get another ticket printed before going through security.
