Will the Peach Drop in 2016? It’s still up in the air.
With less than a month to go before the new year arrives, there has been no clear answer from city officials about whether the 26-year tradition in Atlanta will take place on Dec. 31. In response to multiple inquiries, city officials say they are working to determine the future of the event and will keep us posted.
In late October, Robb Pitts, a former member of the Atlanta City Council, expressed his concerns about losing the tradition, billed as the largest New Year’s Eve celebration in the Southeast.
“Rather than sit back and watch as this great event is shuttered at the height of its popularity, I have focused my efforts on somehow preserving this signature Atlanta celebration,” Pitts said in a statement.
Underground Atlanta, where the Peach Drop has been held, is being sold to South Carolina-based WRS Inc. Real Estate Investments. The closing is reportedly scheduled to take place after New Year’s, which means the new owners won’t be in place in time for Peach Drop 2016. That leaves the event’s fate with the city of Atlanta.
Pitts, focused on finding another location, commissioned a survey that polled 500 metro area adults on where they would like to see the event in the future. Centennial Olympic Park was the choice of 47 percent of respondents, while 22 percent chose Piedmont Park. Atlantic Station and downtown on Peachtree Street were chosen by 16 percent and 12 percent respectively.
But time is running down, unlike the clock on the official Peach Drop Web page , which remains stuck on zero.
