This week Forbes released its inaugural list of "Top Influencers" which included top beauty vloggers like Zoe Sugg, the British vlogger who has 11 million YouTube subscribers, a bestselling line of beauty products and a collection of hit novels, Michelle Phan and Huda Kattan.
But the well-meaning advice of these online gurus may be taking women down the wrong path when it comes to their beauty routines.
"There are so many Instagram and YouTube trends that women blindly follow but it doesn’t work for everyone," said Lena Koro, Global Artistic Director for NARS cosmetics. "It can look really heavy. Makeup shouldn’t take over your face. Your makeup shouldn’t look beautiful, you should look beautiful."
Koro, who began her career as first assistant to the brand's founder François Nars and has worked with a range of celebrities including Jennifer Lopez and Salma Hayek, is making a rare personal appearance in Atlanta on Friday, April 14.
The event, which is open to the public, will be held at the NARS boutique in the Shops Buckhead Atlanta. It offers locals the opportunity to work one-on-one with Koro to update and remake their beauty routines. Consultations are by appointment only from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. and cost $100 which can be used toward the purchase of products.
As the global artistic director, Koro travels the world working behind the scenes at fashion shows such as Prada, Marc Jacobs and Valentino in addition to collaborating with top fashion publications. Here's a video of Koro working her magic in a recent video from Cleo Thailand:
While women should be wary of following every makeup trend out there, Koro said it is important to update your look.
"Play with your makeup to find a few looks that work for you. You should have fun with it. If you don’t like it, you can always take it off. Makeup is a great tool to make women feel confident and sexy, inside and out," she said.
New product releases from NARS include the much-anticipated collaboration with French style icon, Charlotte Gainsbourg. Several limited-edition formulas in the collection offer makeup lovers the natural-looking elegance that Koro describes.
Gainsbourg, who admits she doesn't wear a lot of makeup, started by deciding on the kind of product she wanted to use. The results, a series of new Lip Tints ($26 each), Hydrating Glow Tint ($36 each) and Multiple Tints ($39 each) are lightweight, sheer colors that wear comfortably on the skin and look natural on a range of skin tones.
The products are perfect for the woman seeking the makeup essentials that Koro feels every woman should own.
"A good smudgy eyeliner to create a smoky eye and a bold lip color, these are two beauty looks that never go out of style," she said.
If your makeup collection could use a seasonal update, Koro said the new NARS Sun Wash Diffusing Bronzer ($40) is the item of the moment. The new powder offers a matte finish that gives skin a soft focus effect. It comes in four shades from light to dark.
"The totally matte formula allows you to build dimension and add subtle warmth to the skin," said Koro. And that is the perfect start to any spring/summer look.
