Georgia is the most haunted state in the South according to Instagram.

In honor of the approaching Halloween season, Halloween Express set out to find which states are scariest. The authors conducted an analysis of Instagram posts with the hashtag #HauntedHouse and Georgia ranked fourth.

New York came in first place while Georgia managed to out-spook other states in the southern region including Tennessee and Louisiana.

When you exclude the month of October -- Georgia has the fourth highest number of haunted houses -- indicating that residents like to get spooked year round.

Georgia claimed the top spot for the state with the most popular haunted house thanks to Netherworld -- the Atlanta attraction known for live actors and special effects that deliver a super-scary experience.

This year, the Netherworld grand opening night is Sept. 23. You can find more information and get tickets at fearworld.com .
