Every summer, Matt Murschel of the Orlando Sentinel undertakes the massive task of ranking all the FBS (formerly Division I-A) football teams. Murschel slots Georgia Tech at No. 55 this time , which is above the halfway point -- there are 128 FBS teams -- but not all that far above it. Still, there's a bit of a silver lining.
Even at 55th, Tech should be favored -- at least by the Sentinel's ratings -- in half its games . Wofford, against which Tech opens, isn't ranked since it's an FCS member, and Tulane (75th), Georgia Southern (124th), Virginia (118th), North Carolina State (98th) and Pittsburgh (66th) are all gazing upward at the relatively mighty Jackets.
Of Tech, Murschel writes:
The Yellow Jackets would feel a lot better about their ability to consistently thrash opponents on the ground if their offensive line was experienced. Three starters along that front are gone. Entering last season, the group had 105 career starts. Now the Yellow Jackets have linemen with just 45 career starts.
For the record, the Sentinel also ranks Tech above half the teams on Georgia's schedule. Kentucky is 107th, Arkansas 96th, Tennessee 88th, Troy 69th and Vanderbilt 57th. (Charleston Southern of FCS isn't rated.)
Oh, and since you asked: Georgia State is again ranked last by the Sentinel -- No. 128.
